What will I wear?

A question that stirs your head the moment you have an event that requires you to "be outside". It's more surprising how almost everybody can relate to this dilemma, regardless of the size of their closet.

For many, the pressure to dress right can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to adhering to fashion rules and trends. But what if I told you that you don't have to conform to any fashion laws? What if I told you that whatever you decide to wear, as long as you can pull it off, can be considered fashion, even if it breaks the laws of fashion?

Well, whether you're a fashion enthusiast or someone who simply wants to dress comfortably and confidently, I will make you understand the concept of fashion freedom as we challenge the status quo with this blog post.

Fashion Freedom

Fashion freedom is simply the ability to dress however you want, without worrying about what others may think or say. With fashion freedom, you’re able to experiment with different styles and even mix and match clothes in your closet whether it's on-trend or not.

But how do you reach this point in fashion freedom?

One way to attain fashion freedom is to embrace your personal style. Embracing your personal style requires you to know yourself, understand what you like and what you don't, and have the confidence to express yourself through your clothing choices.

Here are a few tips to help you embrace your personal style:

  • Create a Signature Style: Think about the type of clothes you love and feel comfortable in, and build your wardrobe around them.

  • Find Inspiration: Take inspiration from various sources, such as fashion blogs, social media, fashion influencers like bola_montana or kie_kie_, and celebrities like Kim Oprah. Follow a few that align with your personal style and take note of how they style different pieces. But don’t just copy or imitate them, put your spin on it to create a unique look.

  • Find Clothes That Fit Well: When clothes fit well, you feel more comfortable and confident. Invest in pieces that flatter your body shape and accentuate your best features.

  • Experiment With Different Styles: Don't be afraid to mix and match clothes in your wardrobe to create unexpected outfits. The key is to be creative and have fun with your look.

  • Comfort and Confidence: Ultimately, the most important thing when choosing your style is to feel comfortable and confident in your outfit choices. If you feel like yourself and are happy with your outfit, you will be less worried about what others would think.

How to Look Stylish on a Budget

If you're looking to build your wardrobe on a budget, there are several ways you can do so;

  • Shop at Thrift Stores: You can find some amazing pieces that were previously worn by someone else but still look great. Plus, the prices are generally much lower than those of new items sold in retail stores. Check out thrift stores like Swap or thredUp. You can even visit the one place everyone in Lagos knows about, Yaba Market place or any other thrift stores close to you or you can check out online stores on Instagram.

  • Keep an Eye Out for Sales: Many retailers offer discounts throughout the year so keep tabs on what's going on with different companies' websites so that when something catches your eye at a discount price point, there won't be any hesitation before buying it because "it's too cheap not to!"

  • Buy Timeless Pieces: While trends come and go, certain styles never go out of style, think a leather jacket, a mini skirt, or a pair of jeans. These pieces will never go out of style and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

  • Shop for Accessories: Accessories can transform an outfit and elevate a simple look. Think statement jewellery, a stylish scarf, or a trendy hat. The best part is that they can be affordable and can be worn with multiple outfits, making them a great way to switch up your style.

  • Take Care of Your Clothes: Taking proper care of your clothes can help them last longer and look better. Follow washing instructions on the labels and invest in quality hangers to prevent stretching or damaging your clothes.

Takeaway

As a fashionista (at this point you should already be thinking of yourself as one), you should always be free to express yourself through your wardrobe. You should not be limited by laws or rules that don't make sense.

You have the freedom to be creative, experiment with different styles, and have fun with your clothes because that is what fashion is all about; self-expression and confidence. So wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident, and let your personal style shine.
